Its never too late to start reversing the process of thyroid imbalance. Thyroid imbalance takes time to develop. It is a slow, long process that can take years. Many people are in that process. Perhaps you find yourself in that process. Here's the thing, you can start reversing the process of thyroid imbalance today through a clear understanding your nervous system and its role in your daily life.

One way to understand and balance your thyroid health is to understand your autonomic nervous system and the role "signaling" plays in your thyroid health. Your autonomic nervous system is made up of two branches: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. Your nervous system is autonomic, ( almost like the word "automatic"), in that it is not something you think about. Rather, it is signaled and kicked into gear without you giving it a thought. When you breathe, digest food, get scared or excited, you are not thinking about it. ..it is autonomic.

Your sympathetic system is associated with "fight or flight" signaling. It is used when you are scared or are moving with high intensity. It can also be activated when you are really excited about something. This system is very important for survival, is important for when you require athletic performance, or for when you are giving a presentation. When needed, your sympathetic nervous system is activated!

Your parasympathetic nervous system also takes place without thinking about it. It controls your rest, healing, and digestion. It takes place when you are in a calm state and are completing important bodily processes. Most of your life you should be relaxed and rested, and able to sleep effectively. Perhaps if you are a high-level athlete and training really hard, you will not be in a parasympathetic state as often. But, generally speaking, you should be in a parasympathetic state as much as possible.

There are periods in your lives when you really need to activate your sympathetic nervous system, like if you are exercising, or if someone cuts you off when you are driving. You need to react quickly. Or maybe you are just excited about something. You need your sympathetic nervous system to be activated for these times.

The key to thyroid health balance is that you NEED balance between your sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. You cannot have both systems working at the same time. When your parasympathetic system goes up, your sympathetic system goes down. When you are resting, you ability to have quick flight reactions goes down. When your sympathetic is up, you are getting less activity than when your parasympathetic is up, and will not be able to digest your food as well, or rest and recover well.

The bottom line is that you heal when you rest. If you are "jacked up" in a sympathetic state, you area literally not digesting your food properly for nutrients. You might get away with this behavior for a few years of your life (maybe even ten or twenty years), but it is eventually going to catch up with you. The more you sacrifice healing, rest, and recovery for getting tasks done or performance, the more your thyroid is going to be negatively affected. This will lead to chronic thyroid imbalances and disease. The key is for you to find and create ba
